As temperatures rise during summer, many people reach for ice-cold water to cool down quickly. However, health experts warn that drinking extremely chilled water may not always be ideal for the body. According to doctors, very cold water can sometimes disrupt digestion, affect nutrient absorption, and trigger oesophageal spasms that may cause stomach or chest pain.
Experts explain that the sudden temperature difference between the body and icy water can also briefly slow heart rate and create discomfort similar to a “brain freeze.” While cold water is generally safe in moderation, doctors recommend avoiding excessive intake of ice-cold drinks, especially immediately after intense heat exposure or physical activity.
