Too much salt may affect memory and social behavior, but researchers in Japan have identified a potential protective compound. In a study involving mice, the soy-derived compound LPC70 helped counter several effects of a high-salt diet. Animals given the supplement had lower blood pressure, better memory, and improved social interactions than mice that consumed excess salt without it. The findings offer new clues about how dietary compounds might help protect the brain from the effects of excessive salt intake. However, the research has only been conducted in mice, so further studies are needed to establish whether LPC70 could provide similar benefits in humans.
