Back pain is becoming a growing global health problem, with an estimated 619 million people affected in 2020. Research suggests that prolonged sitting and screen-based sedentary behaviour may contribute to chronic neck, shoulder and back pain. A large UK study involving more than 481,000 people found that each additional hour of daily screen-based sedentary time was associated with a 5% higher risk of chronic back pain. Poor posture, limited outdoor activity and long periods of inactivity have also been associated with spinal problems in younger people. While these studies do not prove that screen time directly causes back pain or scoliosis, they highlight the importance of regular movement, proper ergonomics and frequent breaks from prolonged sitting.
