Turns out swapping sugar for artificial sweeteners might come with a hidden cost. A new study found that adults with the highest intake of sugar substitutes experienced noticeably faster declines in memory and thinking, with cognitive aging equivalent to roughly 1.6 years faster compared to those with the lowest intake, and the effect was even more pronounced in people under 60 or living with diabetes. It’s a striking association, but researchers are careful to note it doesn’t prove sweeteners are the cause, just that more research is needed to sort out what’s really going on. Still, it’s a good reason to keep an eye on how much diet soda and “sugar-free” everything is sneaking into your daily routine.
