A large clinical trial published in The Lancet reveals that simply drinking more water may not be enough to prevent kidney stones from returning. Despite using smart water bottles, coaching, reminders, and incentives, participants struggled to maintain the high fluid intake needed for prevention.
Although hydration levels improved, it didn’t significantly reduce stone recurrence across the group. Researchers say the challenge lies in long-term adherence and the fact that fluid needs vary by individual.
The findings highlight the need for personalized prevention strategies, combining tailored hydration goals with medical and lifestyle interventions for better long-term outcomes.
