Researchers have identified a group of brain cells called orexin neurons that play a key role in maintaining motivation when achieving a reward becomes increasingly challenging. In animal studies, blocking the activity of these neurons reduced the willingness of rats to continue working for rewards, suggesting that orexin neurons help sustain goal-directed behavior. The findings provide new insights into the brain mechanisms underlying motivation and may improve our understanding of conditions such as depression, addiction, and other disorders associated with reduced motivation. However, further research is needed to determine whether these findings translate to humans and could lead to new therapeutic approaches.
