New research suggests that liver fat, rather than body mass index (BMI), may be a more accurate early predictor of diabetes risk in Asian Indians. The study found that people with prediabetes had nearly twice as much liver and pancreatic fat as healthy individuals, despite having a similar average BMI. Researchers also observed that every 1% increase in liver fat was associated with a significantly higher risk of abnormal blood sugar levels. These findings highlight that harmful fat stored inside organs may develop long before diabetes is diagnosed. Experts recommend focusing on healthy eating, regular physical activity, and early screening to reduce liver fat and lower future diabetes risk.
