Fatty liver disease, now called Metabolic Dysfunction-Associated Steatotic Liver Disease (MASLD), can affect people who neither drink alcohol nor appear overweight. Doctors warn that the condition is increasingly common among Indians, including young adults and those with sedentary lifestyles. Because it often causes no symptoms in its early stages, liver damage may progress unnoticed from fat accumulation to inflammation, fibrosis, cirrhosis, or even liver cancer. The good news is that early-stage fatty liver can often be improved through weight management, regular exercise, healthier eating, and control of diabetes and cholesterol. An incidental diagnosis should not be ignored—early evaluation can help prevent serious complications.
