Scientists may have uncovered a possible biological explanation for coffee’s links to healthier aging and lower disease risk. Research suggests that compounds found in coffee can activate NR4A1, a receptor involved in protecting cells from stress, inflammation, and damage. When the receptor was removed, these protective effects disappeared, strengthening its potential role in the process. Interestingly, the benefits appeared to come mainly from plant-based compounds such as caffeic acid rather than caffeine itself. The findings highlight NR4A1 as a potential cellular “switch” that could help explain some of coffee’s health associations, although further research is needed to understand how these effects translate to human health.
