Scientists have identified a potential link between dysfunctional brain cells, abnormal myelin production and age-related cognitive decline. Myelin is the protective coating around nerve fibers that helps electrical signals travel efficiently through the brain. Although essential for healthy brain function, disruptions in how myelin is produced or maintained may interfere with communication between nerve cells. Researchers suggest that age-related changes in these supporting cells could contribute to difficulties with memory and thinking. The findings offer a new perspective on how the ageing brain changes, but further research is needed to establish how these processes affect humans and whether targeting them could help preserve cognitive function.
