Tiny RNA changes help Chagas parasite switch into infection mode 🧬

Scientists have uncovered a previously hidden mechanism that helps Trypanosoma cruzi, the parasite responsible for Chagas disease, transform between stages of its life cycle. A study published in PLOS Pathogens identified 170 chemical modification sites in the parasite’s transfer RNAs (tRNAs), with modification patterns differing between infectious and non-infectious forms. Using tRNA sequencing, mass spectrometry, bioinformatics and CRISPR gene editing, researchers showed that these changes help regulate the parasite’s transition into its infectious stage. The findings provide new insights into how T. cruzi adapts inside different hosts. While the discovery is not yet a treatment, understanding these molecular mechanisms could eventually reveal new targets for combating this neglected tropical disease.
