A new study published in the Annals of Internal Medicine found that adding GLP-1 receptor agonists (GLP-1 RAs) to basal insulin therapy does not increase the likelihood of stopping insulin in people with type 2 diabetes compared with SGLT2 inhibitors or DPP-4 inhibitors. Researchers analyzed data from more than 8,800 matched groups of U.S. veterans with type 2 diabetes and observed similar insulin discontinuation rates across all three treatment options over three years. While GLP-1 RAs continue to provide important heart, kidney, and weight-loss benefits, the findings suggest they do not offer a unique advantage in helping patients discontinue basal insulin therapy.
