A nationwide Swedish study has raised questions about whether folic acid (vitamin B9) supplementation can help reduce suicide risk. Researchers analyzed regional data from 2006 to 2021, covering 3,463 suicide-related deaths among adults aged 20–29. The findings showed different associations across age and sex groups, with no statistically significant association among women. However, the study examined regional prescription patterns rather than individual supplement use, meaning it cannot establish whether folic acid increases or reduces suicide risk. Researchers emphasized that factors influencing prescriptions may also affect the results. Further individual-level studies are needed to clarify whether folic acid has a direct role in suicide prevention. The findings do not justify changing its established clinical uses.
