Researchers at the University of Minnesota Medical School have identified why pancreatic cancer can evade the immune system and spread more easily. The study found that some cancer cells shut down a process that normally makes them visible to immune cells. Researchers also discovered that regulatory T cells can prevent helpful CD4 T cells from attacking these hidden cancer cells. By combining a treatment that restores cancer-cell visibility with immunotherapy designed to activate CD4 helper T cells, scientists improved immune responses and reduced cancer spread in preclinical models. The findings highlight the important role of CD4 T cells and could help guide future pancreatic cancer immunotherapies.
