How Zebrafish Heal Spinal Injuries That Humans Simply Can’t 🐟

While humans deal with spinal cord injuries by forming permanent scar tissue that blocks nerve repair, zebrafish somehow heal completely, and a new study in the Journal of Neuroinflammation finally explains how. Researchers at TUD Dresden found that a specific subgroup of neutrophils, the first immune cells to reach an injury, act less like cleanup crew and more like conductors, using a signaling molecule called IL-4 to calm the rest of the immune system down. When scientists blocked these cells, inflammation spiraled and nerve regrowth stalled, but adding IL-4 directly restored healing even without the neutrophils present. It’s a compelling clue for regenerative medicine, though researchers still don’t know if IL-4 works the same way in humans. If it does, it could open a real path toward treating spinal injuries we currently can’t fix.
