New research suggests that parts of the ultra-processed food (UPF) industry use different strategies to challenge concerns about the health effects of these products. Researchers analyzing industry submissions found arguments that processing and additives are safe, nutrient content matters more than processing, and certain products should be separated from “unhealthy” UPFs. Some companies specifically framed their own products – such as plant-based alternatives, cereals, or fortified beverages, as healthier than other processed foods. Researchers describe this as a “my UPF is healthier than yours” strategy, which may shift attention away from broader concerns about ultra-processing and delay stronger public health action.
